My sister and I were never close growing up. We had different friends and interests, and I really missed having someone I could confide in. I wanted someone to share things with, just to make growing up a little bit easier.

I wished Terri would teach me how to put on makeup, show me how to style my hair, or just give me tips on how to talk to boys. She was always so sparkling and glamorous and popular. I envied her and how easy her life seemed to be.

Through the years we went our separate ways and before I knew it, Terri went off to college. When she came home on weekends, it seemed like I'd only see her as she got ready for a date with her fiancé, Ted. She flitted in and out of my life like a beautiful butterfly.

"Hi, Susie," she'd say as she flung her clothes on the bed, deciding which outfit to wear that night. "Can't talk now."

How I longed to sit and talk with her! I wanted to find out what college was like, what life was like outside our little town. But Terri only had time to change her clothes and touch up her makeup. Then she was skipping out the door, looking radiant as ever.

I would watch as she quickly combed her long blonde hair and deftly applied her eye shadow. She was so beautiful. I knew she'd go far in her dream of being an artist. Even though she married Ted, she was still going to become the world's greatest artist. She assured me of that.

One bright sunny day, my boyfriend proposed marriage. I was in Heaven and finally felt the love I'd always craved. I didn't have to compete for the attention my big sister always attracted. Howie was completely mine.

I was busy with plans for my wedding and engagement party. It was the most exciting time of my life. For once, I had my mother's full attention as I picked out the hall, flowers and photographer.

I was a little afraid, but I decided to ask Terri to help me with arrangements for my engagement party. She hugged me for a long time and said she would be happy to help me. From that day on she did everything for me. She put on my makeup for me and picked out the dress to wear, and even made my hair as pretty as hers.

"You look wonderful, Susie," she said with love in her eyes.

Until that moment I never knew Terri had always loved me, but her warm smile made me realize it that day. Now I know the real meaning of the word "sister." Her love was always there - I just had to reach out for it.
